Plymouth Mind Befriending Scheme

The aim of the project is to recruit and train suitable people to work as volunteer befrienders who are then matched with people in the community who may feel anxious, isolated or depressed and would like to be befriended. Close links are maintained with health care professionals. The scheme helps to reduce the need for their input when clients no longer require their specialist help.

Volunteers are obligated to attend training and supervision sessions. The majority of clients are visited on a weekly basis for one to two hours.

Befriending Scheme

A unique service for people with mental health needs.

What is the Befriending Scheme?

The Befriending Scheme is a confidential service that exists to offer additional support to people who have mental health needs. Under the scheme, people with mental health problems will be matched with volunteer Befrienders.

User participation is entirely voluntary and the scheme operates in addition to, not as a substitute for, Statutory Services.

Who is the scheme for?

The scheme is available to anyone who:

-         has severe mental health problems

-         is under the care of Adult Mental Health Services

-         can live independently in the community with appropriate support.

Why is it needed?

People with mental health problems frequently experience a loss of confidence in their ability to maintain a social life, access local amenities etc. This is where a Befriender can really help by offering support and by helping to establish the kind of community life most of us take for granted.

If I want to use to service…

What support will I receive?

You will be matched with a volunteer who will spend a designated time with you on each visit. Your Befriender is someone who will offer you support, companionship and a listening ear.

Your time together could be spent doing social things such as going for a walk, a cup of tea or perhaps sharing an activity together.

How long will the friendship last?

The service is flexible and will take into account your personal circumstances. The length of time will be discussed with you in advance and will be regularly reviewed.

What if it does not work out?

If things don’t work out for whatever reason, every effort will be made to rectify the situation.

How can I be referred?

Ask your GP, nurse, social worker or key worker to refer you.

If I want to become a Befriender…

What will I get from the scheme?

Befriending is very satisfying and rewarding voluntary work. You will gain experience of participating with people in our community who often feel isolated and afraid because of their mental health problems.

In addition, through ongoing training and supervision, the befriending scheme offers excellent opportunities for personal growth and development.

Befriending also provides invaluable experience for people who may want to work in the caring profession.

What support will I receive?

You will receive relevant on-going information and support from the Scheme’s Co-ordinator. In addition, Volunteer meetings provide Opportunities for regular group discussions and get-togethers.

Will I be out of pocket?

No, we will pay for public transport fees or mileage allowances if you have car.

What experience or qualifications do I need?

Befrienders are caring people from all walks of life who are good at listening. They encourage and support without giving advice or telling people what to do.

How can I apply?

Simply phone or write for an application form. When you have returned this form and satisfactory references have been received, we will invite you to come and see us and arrange a date for training to take place.

Training is a two-day course where we look at listening skills, mental health awareness and attitudes.

When can I start Befriending?

Once the training and a follow up interview have been successfully completed, you will be ready to start Befriending, once a suitable match has been found.

I would like to become a Befriender, what should I do now?
