Progress GB is an Equal Development Partnership, which aims to address barriers to appropriate employment for refugees and migrants. Refugee Employment Adviser, Jill Palmer is based at Plymouth Mind. Mind works in partnership with Open Doors International Language School, Working Links and START (students and refugees together). The project will look at innovative approaches that will support refugees and migrants to develop and adapt their skills for the UK labour market. The role of the Refugee Employment Adviser will be principally to work at a strategic level although some casework will be carried out. Questionnaires will be sent out to a wide range of employers to look at interest workshops. Workshops will cover permission to work, the advantages of employees regarding issues additional to employment such as housing, ESOL courses, benefits etc. Following this a variety of workshops will take place for refugees and migrants who wish to attend. These will include creating an employment plan, possible portfolios and information packs about work values in the UK. A Steering group of all project partners will direct the course of the project through to the end of 2007. A Stakeholders Group will also meet regularly to build a common framework of activities and goals in Plymouth, for this client group. The Stakeholders Group is made up by: - Refugee Organisations - Refugees and Migrant Workers - Job Centre Plus - Employers and Employment Agencies - Unions - Food and Drinks agency - Government South West - Plymouth City Council - ESOL Providers
