SAFE SPACE
The Safe
Space Project
Safe Space is a positive
force in the promotion of mental well- being for young people, delivered
in Plymouth and its surrounding areas. It is a response to growing evidence
that young people today are increasingly experiencing high levels of stress
and pressure in life.
Self Exploration
for Young People
‘Self Exploration
for Young People’, is a ten guided hour accredited course, delivered within
the project, that aims to create a safe, positive and accepting environment
where young people can learn to explore themselves, as well as learning
ways to access their inner resources to help them deal with the ups and
down of life. It is a fun and creative course and looks at issues such
as, asking for help, getting support, identifying and learning ways to
deal with stress, learning techniques such as visualization, meditation
and relaxation as well as ways of building and maintaining good self esteem.
The project has continued
to be delivered in schools to 11 to 18 year olds. Workshop topics have
included general mental health awareness, stress management, eating disorders,
bullying and self image.
Delivery has been
in the following schools: Parkside Community College, Devonport High School
For Girls, Plymouth High School For Girls, Notre Dame, Tamarside and Estover
Community College.
Evaluation and feedback
forms have been completed for the majority of these workshops and the
data is in the process of being collated. Initial impressions are that
the workshops have been very positively received, from young people and
teaching staff alike.
It is envisaged that
more comprehensive programme of workshops be delivered, with focus on
positive self image, stress management and self-esteem building.
The project will also
need to recruit some volunteers to help facilitate the process.
