Welfare Rights

The Welfare Rights Team, in the Parkside Building, consists of 1 Full Time Paid Employee, plus 1 Full Time Unpaid Volunteer.

During the past 18 months, Wealth Checks have been offered to all Plymouth Mind Members, and if was found that 95% were on the incorrect level of Benefits.

For the year 2004, Benefits Claimed through the Welfare Rights Team, exceeded £250,000 and up to the beginning of July 2005, total benefits claimed for the year, totalled £129,878.

The increase in Benefit Income has had a major beneficial affect on our Members. Not only has the improvement helped financially, but mentally this also has made a major positive impact to their lives. Just being able to have a taxi to enable a person to get out, when Public Transport cannot be used, means their quality of life is improved more than can be imagined. The extra income can mean being able to have a quality of life, as compared with just trying to exist.

We also have two full time workers based in Glenbourne, at Derriford Hospital, and another who works with young people at the Youth Enquiry Service.
